Goldberg Variations 20-24
Footage from director Bruno Monsaingeon's 1981 "Glenn Gould Plays Bach."
I've been woking on ...
I've been woking on playing #20 for months. As usual you see Gould do it so effortlessly and naturally you just throw up your hands. There is NOTHING simple about the way he crosses his hands to play a piece intended for two separate keyboards. He just makes it look that way. Would love to have gotten an MRI of his brain while he played.

It's like he's ...
It's like he's whispering to the piano, "Play, my precious, play. . .!" And the piano complies with gusto. . . 0.0 Nothing like a good artist and great composer to make one feel completely and wholesomely musically incompetent. xD

if there weren't ...
if there weren't any, Gould would have created the most apt lyrics possible! But consider this: he sings not one, but three or four distinct parts - simultaneously. He's a whole opera in himself ;-)

The thing that ...
The thing that might provide some clarity is the fact that he does it in almost every single thing he's ever played - solo piano music is just that...solo. There are no lyrics.

I have conflicting info here. I personally thought he was indeed humming , but have since also heard that he is singing the lyrics to this amazing piece of music. I wonder if that's really so

He's humming the ...
He's humming the melody. It's been a Gould trademark. Engineers used to have fits, trying to find a way to get him to either stop, or to find a method to keep it out of the mix. Alas, they never could - and it's become one of the things we love most about Gould.
