Interview with Reason Cartoonist Peter Bagge

Peter Bagge is the preeminent libertarian cartoonist. An intelligent, anti-authoritarian streak runs throughout his canon, especially in his hit comic book from the 1990s, HATE, a hilarious and politically incorrect series focusing on the semi-autobiographical slacker-misanthrope Buddy Bradley. Bagge frequently contributes his own brand of "cartoon journalism" to the pages of Reason magazine where he also serves as a Contributing Editor. Bagge discusses how he came to define his libertarian political worldview at a young age, and laments his frustration at being an artist who's political views are frequently mischaracterized as "right wing" by other artists, simply for failing to be in lock-step with the rest of the predominantly progressive-left art world. He also discusses a recent Reason assignment which took him within the walls of a women's prison, and how the experience led him to question his own preconceived notions about the drug war and involuntary incarceration for drug users. His funny, outrageous and often introspective anthology of Reason cartoon journalism, "Everyone is Stupid Except Me (And Other Astute Observations)" is available from Fantagraphics. Shot by Alexander Manning. Interview by Nick Gillespie. Edited by Anthony L. Fisher. About 5 minutes. Zippy the Pinhead cartoonist Bill Griffith on Crumb, Spiegelman and the good Toad days! (Interview)

Nothing telegraphs an opinion of someone's intellect more rapidly than calling him or her a "pinhead." And no one has done more to expand the use of the term "pinhead" in our society than daily cartoonist Bill Griffith, creator of the long running "Zippy the Pinhead" comic strip. Zippy is an American icon, a mouthpiece alternatively for the social and political views of his creator or just a place to drop a twisted joke or punchline. But for those who know Zippy the Pinhead only as a syndicated daily comic in newspapers around the world, you might be surprised to learn the character has a rich history starting in the underground comix world of the 1970s. And he was actually a secondary banana to creator Griffith's first character, Mr. Toad. Are We Having Fun Yet?? Zippy the Pinhead by Bill Griffith Order 'Are We Having Fun Yet??' by clicking on the book cover above All sorts of pinhead history can be found in Griffith's introduction to his new collection, Lost and Found: Comics 1969-2003. It's a 364-page treasury of some of the cartoonist's earliest work, including Zippy and pre-Zippy, such as Young Lust, Tales of Toad, Thrilling Murder and more. This is my second conversation with Griffith; the first was back in 1997, when Mr. Media was a syndicated weekly newspaper column. What is Mr. Media® Interviews? TEDx Salem - Cartoonist Madhan - Creativity & Innovation(Tamil)

Madhan is a league by himself in the world of cartooning: he is also well known as a journalist, writer and a film critic. His primary claim to fame was as a cartoonist and his success was his ability to evoke instantaneous laughter. His strong visual ideas were etched in the memory of readers for long. "Advances in the field of multi-media have come as a big plus, but no computer could draw on its own", he says with a chuckle. Madhan started his career as a struggling freelancer, and soon joined the Vikatan Group of Publications as a trainee cartoonist. Later he took over as the Group's Joint Editor, and helped organize the Student Reporters Scheme, under which he trained hundreds of talented college students in the field of journalism. Though a cartoonist, he wrote a successful historical serial on the Great Mughals - Vandhargal Vendrargal (They Came, They Conquered) in Junior Vikatan, which was subsequently published as a book. It was a best-seller, running to 18 editions, with one and a half lakh copies sold. His question-and-answer series 'Hai Madhan'in the Ananda Vikatan magazine is very popular among Tamil readers. In recent times he has emerged as a well-known film critic on television. "Madhan's Thirai Parvai" on the Tamil television channel Star Vijay was a whopping success, completing 350 shows. His habit of putting across his opinion about the movie through cartoons at the end of the show had become very popular. Besides, he has also penned the dialogues for ...

Syria - Assad Breaks Hands of Cartoonist who mocked him - Ali Farzat 8-24-11

Don't draw Cartoons mocking the Dictator of Damascus if you Value your health! This is the message sent to Syria Cartoonist Ali Farzat, who was set up in a fake car accident in Damascus, and then kidnapped by Security Forces, Beaten and then dumped back out onto the streets with two broken hands and fingers ----------------- Guardian News UK: "Syrian forces beat up a prominent Syrian political cartoonist and left him bleeding on the side of a road, in the latest episode of a campaign to quash dissent against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. Ali Ferzat, 60, is one of the Arab world's most famous cultural figures, and his drawings have pushed at the boundaries of freedom of expression in Syria. Working from a gallery in central Damascus, Ferzat has long criticised the bureaucracy and corruption of the Syrian and other Arab regimes -- earning him a death threat from former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein. Since March he has turned to depicting the uprising. In the early hours of Thursday, masked men seized Ferzat from the street and forced him in to a van. A relative has said that Ferzat's attackers targeted his hands, breaking them both, and told him it was "just a warning" before leaving him by the roadside with a bag over his head. In a galvanising moment similar to when the corpse of 13-year-old Hamza al-Khateeb was returned to his parents bearing marks of severe torture in May, Syrians have been expressing outrage.
